Natural Loc Reference

Loc Length Chart

Explore natural dreadlock lengths from starter locs to mature waist and floor-length locs. Learn how shrinkage, internal density, and loc maturation affect visible length.

Loc lengths represent physical cylindrical length from root to tip. Maturation shrinkage and internal fiber coiling influence visible hang.

Loc Growth Phases & Maturation Milestones

How locs evolve from initial coiling to established mature length.

1. Starter / Baby Locs
Months 1 to 3
2″ to 4″ (5 to 10 cm)

Freshly coiled or two-strand twisted sections. Scalp grid is distinct; hair is lightweight.

2. Budding & Shrinkage Phase
Months 3 to 9
3″ to 6″ (7.5 to 15 cm)

Fibers expand and interlock internally. Hair experiences 20% to 40% temporary shrinkage in visible length.

3. Teenage Phase
Months 9 to 18
6″ to 10″ (15 to 25 cm)

Locs begin gaining weight and dropping downward naturally across the neck and shoulders.

4. Mature & Rooted Locs
Year 2+
12″ to 36″+ (30 to 90 cm+)

Dense, uniform cylinders with consistent downward growth. Solid weight and high styling versatility.

Loc Length FAQ

How is natural loc length measured?

Natural locs are measured with a soft measuring tape starting at the root/scalp anchor where the loc emerges and running along the cylinder of the mature loc to the tip. Because locs contract and expand during maturation, length should be measured while the loc is hanging naturally.

Why can mature locs appear shorter than loose hair when starting out?

During the budding and initial locking phases (months 3 to 12), hair fibers coil, interlock, and contract within the loc cylinder, causing temporary shrinkage of 20% to 40% before consistent downward growth resumes in mature stages.

Does loc thickness affect visible length and weight?

Yes. Thicker locs (such as traditional or wicks) hold more internal hair density and mass, creating a solid vertical drape, whereas micro-locs and Sisterlocks behave more like loose strands with lighter individual movement.

How does height affect where locs and faux locs fall on the body?

Just as with loose hair, a wearer’s height and torso length dictate body landmarks. 20-inch locs will reach the waist on a petite individual, but will rest near the mid-back / bra strap on a taller person.
